ACCT Reaches 90% Canine Save Rate, CNKP Prevents Hundreds of Surrenders

For the first time in history, Philadelphia's open-admission animal control shelter, ACCT Philly has saved 90% of the savable dogs that entered its shelter in a summer month. This incredible achievement is attributed to the hard work of the shelter's dedicated staff members, volunteers, rescue partners, fosters and the community of Philadelphia. During June, ACCT Philly took in 1,840 total animals including 1,133 cats, 494 dogs, and 213 wildlife & small animals. Its feline save rate reached 84%, no small feat in the midst of "Kitten Season".

In January of 2018, ACCT announced itself as a founding member of the Philadelphia No-Kill Coalition, a collective of animal-welfare agencies dedicated to making Philadelphia a no-kill city. While this cannot and will not happen overnight, incremental achievements such as increases to ACCT's save rate should be recognized and celebrated!

Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia relocated its Community Pet Help Desk to reside within the walls of ACCT Philly in March, 2018 in order to help those Philadelphians faced with having to surrender their pets during times of hardship navigate available resources necessary to keep their pets. A Help Desk employee is available seven days a week during front desk operation hours. Since the move to ACCT Philly, the Community Pet Help Desk has handled in 455 client cases and prevented 207 of 288 in-person surrenders to ACCT Philly. CNKP has also received 302 owner surrender requests through its Connect with a Rescue tool since March which connects pet owners who cannot keep their pets with a network of local no-kill animal shelters and rescues.

CNKP's Community Pet Pantry helps keep dozens of pets home with their beloved families every month.

Even with a 90% canine save rate in June and the CNKP Help Desk working in full swing, there is still work to be done! Summer is a very hard time for all shelters, as intake peaks. ACCT Philly's canine kennels are currently at capacity and kitten season is upon us. Help is needed to keep up the momentum! ACCT Philly is open for adoptions every single day. Consider saving a life by fostering or adopting a pet! Additionally, ACCT Philly is participating in NBC10's Clear the Shelters event on August 18 - swing by the main shelter or its Everyday Adoption Center for fee-waived adoptions, food, games, and music!
